Ode to Jane Austen

Thursday, 21 December

Twas a big day for the little girl today - her first big trip! Her grandparents and I took her out for the day to visit Jane Austen's house, about an hour outside of London (except of course it took us two to get there!). We made the trek for Dad's 60th bday present, and both he and Beatrice loved it. Fighting the fog we drove out to Chawton, the little village where Jane Austen lived for many years and where she wrote and revised novels like Pride and Prejudice (www.jane-austens-house-museum.org.uk).

Unfortunately we missed the easy pub lunch across the street as they were having a Christmas party, but luckily the lady taking tickets at Jane Austen's house didn't mind me feeding Beatrice. As she said, Jane always had nieces and nephews running around the place, so she was sure it would be ok. Of course once Beatrice was fed, she became overwhelmed with the whole experience and... had to change outfits. Luckily Grandma Elizabeth was there to comfort her after the whole ordeal. And she did get her picture taken with the grandparents at Jane's writing table. Lucky girl.

After an 'easy' drive back to London through the dense fog and frost, the grandparents babysat while Zack and I went out for a nice dinner up the street. Beatrice loved it! As did her parents.
