Exciting New Year's Eve

Sunday, 31 December

Wow, is 2006 really over? I feel like...I don't know...like I had a baby, I guess. The last month plus has been a bit of a blur...wonderful, but definitely a blur! Our lives have definitely changed. I never thought I'd one day speak with such animation about "poo" with the man I love. Luckily we're both equally interested in little Beatrice's bowel movements (at least I haven't penned a song about them as Zack has!) Beatrice is so amazing. Now I'm starting to wonder how we ever lived without her.

We rounded out 2006 with a very lazy day with Megan, Colby and Eleanor - rising late, taking a long walk through Regent's Park, and even going to pub. It was Beatrice's first official pub visit. She and Eleanor charmed everyone around us.

As I type this, at 11:30pm on New Year's Eve Zack is dancing with Beatrice to calm her (to Journey's Greatest Hits - she does like her power ballads! Beatrice thinks it needs more cow bell though.), and Eleanor is splashing in the bath. Wild times were had by all. The adults are hoping for a break long enough to toast each other at New Year's!

We wish you all a Happy New Year!

Baby?

Saturday, 30 December

Today we had lots of time with Eleanor checking on Beatrice - every move needed some time for Eleanor to say "Baby?" and then we had to check and see what Baby Beatrice was doing. Often this was doing such exciting things as sleeping or getting her diaper changed. Eleanor did wake up and decide she and her baby needed to sleep a bit more in the big bed - so cute!
We went out for a walk and even managed a lunch out with the girls - they slept through it. In the afternoon we rested and checked on "Baby?"

At the end of the day, the girls crashed - all 4 of us!

Cousin Eleanor arrives!

Friday, 29 December

Cousin Eleanor arrived today! With Aunt Megan and Uncle Colby too, of course. They made the long trip out from California to meet Beatrice. We had a great evening relaxing at home and catching up, as the girls took over.
Watching the two of them together is adorable. Eleanor was constantly checking on "Baby" on our walk to the store - she needed to peer into Beatrice's stroller to check everything was ok. In the pictures below she and Beatrice are playing with rabbit and Eleanor is kissing Beatrice's toes. My favorite though is the picture of Megan burping Beatrice and Eleanor following suit with her own baby doll!

The next two weeks will be fun with them here. It is so nice to have them here, as last night was another rough night. We had to do lots of dancing to work out the cranks in the morning. But we did venture out before Megan, Colby and Eleanor arrived - Beatrice and I went to lunch with my friend Jennifer (adult conversation - yippie!) and even braved Oxford Street to buy some baby supplies (ok, and get a Krispy Kreme doughnut).

Matt and Christina stopped by to visit and meet Beatrice in the afternoon. We all marvelled at Beatrice's growing outfit collection. The child doesn't have mere clothes - she has ensembles! I love this little red PJ suit that Eleanor L sent her (she has so many Eleanors that love her!). It is even monogrammed!

Other than that what else is new? Zack has given Beatrice yet another new moniker, Beat-Rice, a nickname coined by Uncle Graham it seems. I think I like Poop-the-Pooper better. And I spent some time in the evening wondering again just how this little girl fit inside me?? Especially given she is just now back up to her birth weight of 4kg!

Dancin' in the dark

Thursday, 28 December

It seems Beatrice likes to dance as much as I do. When she's cranky we do a bit of dancing in the living room with the music turned way up. Best of all though, she's also a big fan of slow dancing to country ballads..."Bama Breeze" by Jimmy Buffett, that her Grandma Elizabeth and Grandpa Bill brought us for Christmas, is a particular favorite these days. So pre-nap we often rock and two-step our way around the living room (quite a feat actually, for those who haven't seen our living room!)

In the afternoon Beatrice had a play-date with Callia, or rather I had a play-date with her mom, Elaina! We walked in the park and shopped a bit on the High Street while the girls slept in their prams. Callia is only a few months older than Beatrice, so they'll have fun playing together soon. Beatrice did try to wear the cute bear coat Callia gave her, but she needs a bit more growing first!

It was play time when Zack got home, with Beatrice watching that wooden clown as if her life depended on it (I think she just likes the cheering Zack does when she follows it with her eyes).

Then it was time for Beatrice's very first bottle. As with nursing, she took to it immediately. The only problem was that it took me 10 minutes to pump and 2 minutes for her to suck it down. And after the bottle I had to feed her more anyway. Hmmm...we'll figure this out eventually. It was funny though because she had been "nursing" Zack's forearm for a while, and you could almost see her thinking, "I knew it would work if I just kept at it!"

One month old!

Wednesday, 27 December

Beatrice spent her 1 month birthday very quietly, especially compared with all the previous days' festivities and activities. She and I slept in - Zack took this picture before leaving for work. I like that we're nose to nose almost.

About 8am I got up and got ready for the day, thinking she'd be up soon as she'd slept straight from 11pm to 7am (we are counting our lucky stars). When she was still asleep at 10, I got smart and napped with her until she got up again at noon. Such a rock star lifestyle... Beatrice must have been tired though, because she still spent much of the rest of the day napping. It was a big month for her!

As it was her 1 month birthday I did force her to take some pictures with the bear in her cute new outfit. She tolerated it for a bit.

Zack and I had fun talking about how much she has changed over the previous month tonight. She is definitely growing up! I've tried to highlight some of the things we have noticed below. This list will likely be incredibly boring to everyone except us - consider yourselves forewarned:

* Beatrice is so much more active now - awake (except for today) and alert for many more hours every day (and night) than when she first got home. She punches the air with her hands and feet most of the time when she's awake. She likes to be held up so she can "stand" and "walk" on a table. And Beatrice definitely has a stong neck - she's held her head up (with varying degrees of success) since she was two days old, though she does do a good Stevie Wonder impersonation when you hold her upright on your shoulder. And of course she likes to launch herself off of you if you give her half a chance. She's also grabbing on to lots of things - my hair and necklace are favorites.
* Beatrice watches us and can obviously see much farther distances than when she first got home. She will watch me walk across a room and keeps a very close eye on me while nursing. She often tracks Zack as well, reacting not only to seeing him but also to hearing him. She'll stop nursing if he comes in and talks to me. And the other day she craned her neck around looking for him when he moved out of her line of sight.
* She even seems to have the beginnings of a schedule, which thankfully for us includes longer periods of sleep at night. Amazingly she often goes to bed sometime between 10pm and 12pm and then sleeps through to 6 or 7am, though a 4am wake up is not out of character either. After waking up she'll eat hungrily and then sleep again for another 2-3 hours in the morning, often in bed with me. This is often blogging time. We realize we're really lucky she sleeps so much so early! Here's hoping it lasts.
* Beatrice is also starting to talk to us in her own special way. Right now most of her sounds seem to be made for her own entertainment, most often when we're not around. She likes to spend time on her own, either in the bouncy chair or in her crib in the mornings, just moving and sort of cooing or grunting. When she is ready for us to play with her she lets us know! My favorite noises right now are the grunts she makes when she's either about to or is nursing.
* Still no real smiles at us yet, but we're hoping they come soon. That small dimple is to die for!
* Beatrice still doesn't like baths that much or changing her clothes or diapers, but there is much less screaming these days than before, so we seem to be moving in the right direction.
* She also likes to burrow into me when nursing and likes to make sure she's got a good grip on me with her little hands. She'll still try to nurse most anything that comes near her mouth - Daddy's finger, arm or neck are particular, though not very fruitful, favorites.
* Just last night we had to stop using the infant blocks in her crib - she had inched her way up out of them and turned 90 degrees sideways. Our little inchworm!

Today she definitely missed her grandparents and Uncle Graham, and Zack had to go back to work, so it was just the two of us all day. Perhaps this explains why she slept so much - she was bored! Luckily her California family arrives in a few days, so she'll get lots more love and attention very soon.

Boxing Day

Tuesday, 26 December

As we're still not entirely sure what one is supposed to do on Boxing Day (I got curious, so I googled - www.factmonster.com/spot/boxingday1.html), we spent the day doing what we could - which primarily consisted of organizing all the new presents, reading, watching TV, and eating ham and cheese galore.

Beatrice started the day by watching her Daddy put together her new changing table from IKEA. At one point Zack was behind it out of her line of sight, and she started looking around, moving her head, trying to find him. It was very cute. She really likes her new changing table, and all of our backs love it! Zack hung her mobile above the table, but Beatrice hasn't noticed it quite yet, though she does seem to like the little garbage basket on the table.

Beatrice also "talked" to us today. She and Grandma Elizabeth were sitting in the rocking chair and I thought the chair was just squeaking more than normal - nope, it was little Beatrice talking away. Mama, Beatrice's Great-Grandmother, said she had a dream that she was holding Beatrice and talking to her and Beatrice suddenly talked back to her, quite surprisingly. Luckily for all of us the "talking" we heard today was only coo's, squeaks and a few grunts.

Mom and I spent much of the afternoon organizing Beatrice's clothes. The child has more clothes than Madonna! Luckily for us (given our lack of closet/storage space in London), she's already outgrown much of it. We decided that when she hits the 3-6 month clothes I won't need to do any wash - she can just wear a new outfit each day and we can throw it away at the end of the day! (This is a picture of HALF of her clothes)

At the end of the day we had to say a tearful goodbye to Grandma Elizabeth and Granddaddy Bill and Uncle Graham as they were leaving at the crack of dawn the next day. It was very sad to see them go, but so wonderful and special to have them all here for Christmas. Beatrice will certainly miss them!

Merry Christmas

Monday, 25 December

Merry Christmas! We had an exciting day. Santa dropped off presents for Beatrice, though she was more enthralled with Uncle Graham.

And today Beatrice is 4 weeks old. She celebrated by wearing her new fancy Christmas dress and playing a bit with her bear. And yes, her legs are that long!
We spent the morning opening presents. Like Graham's low-tech iPod made of cardboard?
After a great breakfast of bacon and eggs (made in Zack's new cast iron skillet that Mom and Dad hauled all the way from Georgia!), we ventured out for a walk around the neighborhood. First we had to bundle up...
and then we all did a turn as the Beatles on Abbey Road...
Later in the afternoon it was time for a nap and a game of Monopoly (I won, hands down)
We finished off the day with a wonderful Christmas dinner of ham, cabbage and sweet potatoes (and wine and Christmas crackers, of course!)
Hope everyone else had a very Merry Christmas too! Wish we could have been in California and Georgia, both, today!!
