Mini-Florida Vacation

You know what I love best about grandparents? Babysitting. No, not really. Watching Beatrice arm-hug "Granma" and repete "Boom, boom" whenever Granddaddy says "Ka-boom!"...those are my favorite things about seeing my parents with Beatrice. But honestly, the babysitting is a really close second.

So Zack and I took advantage of the offer for a day of babysitting and drove south to Florida for a day's worth of vacation and touristing. Technically we were also celebrating our first fake-real 5th wedding anniversary (the one in Las Vegas). We stopped in Fernindina for a late breakfast and fell in talking with the local coffee crowd there. Mama's twin told us we simply must visit Fort Clinch just down the road. Now a state park, it was originally built after the Civil War. We had a great time exploring. But boy oh boy was it ever HOT!

Unlike California, the shade provides no respite from the heat.
After that we took the slow road down to St Augustine, the oldest city in the US. Though the weather threatened all afternoon, we were able to tour Castillo de San Marcos, the old Spanish fort, and have a lovely late lunch at the new Bistro de Leon, before the skies opened up for a true summer thundershower. Yummy.

We had a good time. And we made it home in time to put Beatrice to bed. Fantastic.
